The real voyage of discovery consists in not seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust (1871-1922)

Start-up Team Effectiveness

Innovative ideas, strong technology, and access to capital are essential for the success of a start-up. Yet the reality is clear: around 90% of start-ups fail globally, and in Europe roughly 50% do not survive their first five years.

Research consistently shows that beyond market and financial factors, internal team dynamics and co-founder conflict are among the most decisive root causes of failure. Team-related factors are among the most dominant drivers of failure or success.

In many start-ups, founding teams begin with strong alignment and shared ambition. Over time, however, differences in vision, expectations, and working styles may emerge. Communication becomes less clear, roles remain undefined, and tensions can intensify – often gradually and unnoticed. What initially appears as a business challenge frequently has its roots in the way the team works together.

Team Effectiveness Coaching complements the entrepreneurial and strategic work within a start-up. It does not primarily address product, market, or financial questions. The focus is on team dynamics and effective collaboration. The aim is to support the development of the founding or leadership team at the same pace as the business evolves.

Start-ups typically seek this work when founding teams are newly formed, when changes in team composition occur, when differences in direction and expectations become apparent or when growth requires new ways of communicating within an enlarged organization. Others use it proactively to strengthen alignment, clarify their common goals, and develop a conscious and effective team culture.

At the same time, VC investors engage this work as a targeted measure to protect and strengthen the teams behind their investments – and thereby contribute to the long-term success of their portfolio companies.

Reflection on team dynamics builds on individual reflection. The better each team member understands their own patterns, expectations, and impact on others, the more effectively the team can work with its internal dynamics. Both conscious and unconscious factors shape communication, decision-making, and collaboration. Making these visible allows teams to address underlying tensions and to develop more stable, resilient ways of working together.

This work can be demanding. At the same time, it creates the conditions for more effective collaboration, better decision-making, and greater long-term stability – both for the team and for the venture.
